Google I/O 2024: Event highlights from an Apps Engineering professional

Anky An is NCS Australia’s Apps Engineering Practice Principal for Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory with expertise across mobile app development, project management and digital transformation initiatives.

As part of his role, Anky manages a software development team of approximately 80 people, oversees multiple projects to ensure optimal team performance and successful client outcomes, and handles resourcing responsibilities. He has also been a Meetup coordinator for several years for Brisbane’s Mobile App Developers Meetup and Google Developer Group organiser for Brisbane for more than one year.

Recently, Anky attended the Google I/O 2024 event in California. In this article, shares his personal highlights and experience. Spoiler alert: it’s all about AI.

Anky’s insights: Google I/O 2024

Here are 5 key takeouts I found from my experience of travelling to this event:

  • Gemini can process 1 million tokens, which is already 8 times larger than ChatGPT. Soon, it will be able to handle 2 million tokens.
  • Gemini Flash is Google’s fastest and most efficient model for high volume tasks, offering low latency and cost.
  • Gemini Nano enables on-device AI functionality with or without internet access and will soon be available on select Google and Samsung devices.
  • Gemini integration in Google Workspace is very exciting, as it can handle all repetitive tasks through AI.
  • Finally, Firebase has been rebranded and introduced a new member, Genkit, making it easier for developers to build and deploy AI applications.
