Q&A: Google I/0 2025
Reflections from Anky An, NCS Apps Engineering Practice Principal (Qld, WA, NT)
Highlights
What were your expectations going in, and how did the event compare?
Heading into Google I/O, I anticipated a strong focus on AI – but even with that in mind, I wasn’t prepared for the scale and impact of what was unveiled. In previous years, I/O typically delivered updates across AI, Android, Flutter, and other core technologies. This year, however, went far beyond the usual. It wasn’t just about evolution – it was about revolution. Some of the demos were so advanced, they made me genuinely question if I was watching something from the future.
What impressed me most was how thoroughly AI has been woven into Google’s entire product suite – from Search and Android to Workspace and beyond. It’s clear Google is no longer experimenting with AI – they’re actively executing a bold, far-reaching strategy to make AI accessible and valuable to everyone. And from what I saw, they’re well on their way.
What were the most exciting announcements or innovations you saw?
The most exciting announcement was Gemini Live – especially how it's woven right across Google's ecosystem. But the real jaw-dropper? Project Astra. Watching it in action, with AI that can see, hear, and respond in real time... it honestly felt like science fiction becoming reality.
If we can’t become Iron Man, we’re definitely getting his AI assistant. And who wouldn’t want that?
They also showed off Google glasses – which gave us a glimpse into the future of how we might interact with the internet or AI itself. I walked away thinking: the future might not be about websites or mobile apps anymore. We’re heading somewhere entirely new.
Industry impact
Are there any trends or technologies from the event that our clients should be paying attention to?
The biggest trend is crystal clear: AI is not coming – it’s already here, moving fast.
If you’re a business, now is the time to start thinking seriously about how AI can play a role. Whether it’s streamlining internal processes, creating smarter products, or reimagining how you engage with your customers – this is the moment to act.
Those who get in early will build a clear advantage. Those who wait? They might struggle to catch up later.
And if you’re not sure where to start – don’t worry. Our teams are already deep in this space, and we’d love to help you explore what’s possible.
Practical applications
What should teams or organisations be doing now to prepare for what’s coming?
The impact of AI is going to be as big as the internet was when it first arrived – maybe even bigger. It’s going to reshape every role and every industry. That doesn’t mean everyone needs to become an AI expert overnight – but it does mean we all need to start thinking about how AI fits into our day-to-day work.
A good starting point? Look for repetitive tasks, data-heavy processes, or areas where your team spends a lot of time. These are often the easiest places to bring in AI and see real results – whether that’s faster workflows, better insights, or smarter customer interactions.
And don’t forget about upskilling. Give your teams the tools and knowledge to experiment with AI now – because the teams that learn early will move faster later.
Some inspiration
What advice would you give to someone attending Google I/O for the first time?
For anyone heading to Google I/O for the first time, here’s my advice: Don’t just focus on the keynotes or tech talks – you can catch most of those online later. The real magic happens on the ground.
What you can’t experience anywhere else are the prototypes and demos – those are exclusive to being there in person.
It’s a rare chance to interact with future tech before the rest of the world even sees it. Whether it’s AI-powered devices, experimental features, or new tools, getting to try them yourself is what makes I/O really special. So plan your day around the demo zones – you won’t regret it.
Anky was the only GDG – Google Developer Group – organiser in Australia invited to attend this event, securing an invite because of his consistent contributions to the tech community. Anky also attended the 2024 event with NCS – and shared his insights about that event after joining in person in the United States.
